Sarıana is a district of Marmaris that gets its name from the Sarı Ana Mausoleum found here.
This is a simple structure reminiscent of Ottoman Dervish Lodge architecture; it was near ruin and so was knocked down and rebuilt in 1986, in red brick, and is open for visits all year around. This verse is written on the sign on the right side of the door:
I AM THE TRUTH, I AM SARI ANA
I AM IN EVERY HEART, I AM SARI ANA
SWORD IN HAND, LITANIES ON MY TONGUE
I AM FROM MARMARIS, I AM SARI ANA
It’s said that Suleiman the Magnificent believed it was necessary to conquer the island Rhodes for the Ottoman Empire to rule the Mediterranean; so he departed from Istanbul on 16 June 1522 with a hundred thousand troops, and arrived in Marmaris in 40 days on Saturday, 26 July. After touring the castle, the sultan paid a visit to Sarı Ana [Yellow Mother] to receive her blessing. Sarı Ana gave him good news, telling him he would conquer Rhodes. Thanks to this military campaign Marmaris gained importance once again, hosted a sultan, and Rhodes was indeed conquered. According to legend, Sarı Ana fed Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent’s entire conquering army with ever-flowing milk from her only cow.
Sarıana Mosque located next to the Sarıana mausoleum is a domed, pretty mosque, built with the contributions of the Religious Affairs Foundation and the local residents; it was re-opened to worship in 1987.
You can visit Sarıana by taking the “dolmush” minibuses that run from Marmaris to Aksaz.
